Curator of Books & Linked Data

Job Summary

The Curator of Books and Linked Data Developer selects and builds collections of millions of the best books and ebooks for the Internet Archive by building external partnerships and leveraging the Archive’s digitization, physical archiving, and IT departments. Responsible for metadata curation and linking the resulting digital books to other resources and vice versa.  Reports to the Digital Librarian and eventually the Director of Books.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Building partnerships to source books to be digitized, acquired, or crawled
  • Managing advisory groups to prioritize sets of books
  • Data mining lists of books to find the best candidates
  • Retrieving and curating metadata from multiple sources
  • Arranging the logistics of book flow
  • Linking the books to other services and linking other services to our books
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications & Skills

  • Partnership building abilities with libraries, vendors, technologists
  • Technical skills: careful python programmer and creator of linux command line scripts
  • Management of technical contractors
  • Outstanding attention to detail
  • Experienced communicator in a variety of settings: public fora, executive meetings, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Loves QA and getting things to a perfect state
  • Travel required, preferred San Francisco work location
  • Education: programming, informatics, technical iSchool programs preferred
  • Experience integrating large, disparate bodies of digital information into a coherent “live” information system that has demonstrated and ongoing use
  • Expertise in eBook formats, metadata, and library systems a plus
